MicroStrategy Sells Bitcoin: What it Means for the rest of us
MicroStrategy, known for its 'never sell' Bitcoin strategy, just offloaded a chunk of its BTC holdings to pay dividends. This move is a big deal, signaling a potential shift in how big companies might manage their crypto treasuries.
Alright Jittie fam, let's talk about something that's got the crypto world buzzing. MicroStrategy, the company practically synonymous with 'buying Bitcoin and never, ever selling it,' just did something… well, they sold some Bitcoin. Yeah, you read that right.
After six years of being the poster child for HODLing, MicroStrategy sold 3,588 BTC . And get this – they sold it at a loss! This wasn't some emergency fire sale, though.
They did it to pay dividends on their preferred stock. While it's a tiny fraction of their massive Bitcoin stash, it's a huge shift in strategy and has everyone talking. The 'Never Sell' Era: What Just Happened?
For years, MicroStrategy's CEO Michael Saylor built his company's identity around accumulating Bitcoin and holding it for the long term. This 'never sell' mantra became a template for other companies looking to add Bitcoin to their balance sheets. It was seen as a rock-solid commitment to Bitcoin's future.
But between June 29 and July 5, MicroStrategy sold 3,588 BTC for around US$216 million. They used these funds to cover quarterly dividends for some of their preferred stock series. The interesting (and slightly wince-inducing) part?
They sold these coins at an average price of around US$59,256-$60,773, while their average purchase cost was closer to US$75,476. Ouch. That's roughly a 20% loss.
